Philip Napier
Sovereign, 1995

A videotape and video installation produced during a residency by Belfast artist Philip Napier in Vancouver, Canada. The video narrative finds analogy between urban layout and images of dental X-rays, feeding into the North American dental fixation and anticipates the intense construction work redefining the city of Vancouver.

As survey, these teeth, animated by the camera, echo with the registers of generations of occupation, of history and of place. The Belfast teeth suggest a bared and tensed, gapped and broken urban landscape.

The installation, shown at Video Inn on 28 October 1995, also incorporated unfurled destination rolls used by Vancouver's rapid urban transit system.
